Fook Yeah @ Empire City

Fook Yeah's setting is as distinctive as its name: Step inside and one of the first things you might notice is an original Andy Warhol silk-screen portrait of Mao Zedong, which Warhol produced in the early 1970s. Farther within, a ravishingly intricate Oriental artistic masterwork looms large beside a private room. Two classic arcade machines nearby are available for complimentary use by customers, with hundreds of games installed (start perhaps with Street Fighter Alpha). And when you finally take a seat at your table, the view outside of a sprawling green lung supplies a beautiful backdrop for a soothing meal.

Fook Yeah's kitchen is versatile enough to offer a feast for various occasions, with a focus on Chinese and Malaysian fare. For office-crowd lunches, expect fuss-free sets of cheerful favourites - the menu is currently evolving, but potential highlights include a rice platter with a chicken chop bolstered by black pepper sauce, acar and crackers; egg-wrapped rice with lemongrass fried chicken; garlic seafood fried rice; Marmite chicken rice; and curry laksa with smoked duck breast (RM14.90 nett each; comes with a drink and dessert of the day).

The food is well-executed, conveying pleasant flavours - the lemongrass fried chicken proved juicy-fleshed, crisp-skinned and convincingly marinated, so we were happy to have an entire extra plate of it. Thumbs up too for the curry laksa, which has become a Fook Yeah signature hit; the smooth, succulent duck brings a satisfying little twist to the traditional preparation.

Fook Yeah is also a venue to consider for bespoke dining, if you're planning a gathering and want a menu exclusively customised for your group. The restaurant's head chef has roughly two decades of professional experience, and he's more than capable of whipping up a comprehensive selection of Chinese banquet fare. Starting this week, poon choi can also be purchased for takeaway throughout the Lunar New Year season.
