Burger on 16 @ Imbi

Put a skirt on it: Burger on 16's flagship offerings include the California Cheese Skirt (RM23.90), which boasts a house-made Aussie beef patty blanketed with a skirt of shredded cheese, if the typical melted cheddar on most burgers isn't sufficient to satiate your cheese cravings. Other interesting options include the Vampire Hates Garlic (RM18.90; with a garlicky patty), as well as burgers with patties specifically spiked with rosemary or oregano. Chicken burgers include the Inferno, a spicy-sauce choice with jalapenos for extra kick (RM17.90; can be topped with a fried egg for RM2) - most of the burgers here evoke the savoury, heavily seasoned flavours of KL street burgers. Fans of fries might be tempted by the Seven Wonders (RM8.50), prepared with a mix of seven herbs & spices that primarily underscores the sodium punch of fast food. Lattes are available.

Thonglor @ Taman Sea, Petaling Jaya

Green curry chicken wrapped in an omelette (RM16.90), Thai instant noodles immersed with prawns in tom yum soup (RM24.90), herb-marinated stewed pork leg with steamed rice & vegetables (RM15.90): Thonglor's take on cuisine from our northern neighbour is meant to convey crowd-pleasing comfort, especially on tempest-tossed evenings when a hot plate of spicy cooking provides welcome relief from the rain. If needed, the off-menu Tom Yum Cocktail packs the final fiery punch.

Schlossrestaurant @ Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

A table at Schlossrestaurant's courtyard affords a very attractive view of Bavaria's Neuschwanstein Castle; the eatery's speciality of roast pork with dumpling & sauerkraut might be much less photogenic, but thankfully, it tastes better than it looks.

Pudu Chan Fatt Wanton Mee @ Damansara Uptown

Pudu's Chan Fatt Wanton Mee is back this month after a 21-year hiatus: The name harks back to a stall in Pudu Market helmed by the late Wong Poon, an immigrant from Canton, from 1955 to 1996. Wong & his wife fed tens of thousands of patrons over four decades with their noodles, painstakingly kneaded & rolled with a bamboo pole. Wong's daughter, Megan, still recalls how she & her siblings began helping their parents prepare dumplings for the noodles from the age of seven; now 56 & freshly retired from a career in finance, Megan is reviving her father's legacy on her mother's wishes, bringing her family's heritage-fuelled recipes to a new generation of customers, many of whom were not alive while her father was in business.

Firm, fresh & springy egg noodles can be served soupy or dry with various combinations, including char siew & sui kow (RM8.50), char siew & prawn wontons (RM8.50) or lion's head meatballs (RM8.50). Flavours prove pleasurably clean & clear, mild & mellow, in a nod to good old-fashioned nostalgia, back when folks had simpler tastes, evoking 1987 a bit more than 2017. Tradition is big here; the pork & liver sausages for the dark soy sauce rice bowl with fried egg are homemade by an independent village-based supplier, conveying a deep, aromatic sweetness (RM10.90). Prices are fair & portions are filling.
