Serimooka @ Telawi, Bangsar

This family-owned shop in Bangsar is a trove of traditional kuih-muih, paying tribute particularly to our childhood favourite of seri muka, relying on recipes by an Ampang-based grandmother who reputedly runs a catering business in Kampung Baru.

The counter is colourfully & bountifully stocked: Pulut seri muka, tepung talam, kuih lapis, binka ubi, kuih koci, kuh ketayap, keria, kuih bakar, pulut inti, lopes, buah Melaka, pulut udang, karipap, cucur badak, talam berlauk - six pieces cost RM7.90, while a dozen is RM14.90. Pretty satisfactory - everything we tried tasted unmistakably fresh, conveying a chew that's tender but not mushy, with an aromatic sweetness that steers gently clear of cloying. Serimooka does justice to cherished classics.

Warm meals are available too - the nasi lemak bungkus is decent, heated to order, with firm, fragrant grains & flavoursome, sweet-spicy sambal (RM3.90). But we'd skip the Nasi Hujan Panas, which leaves not much of a lasting impression (RM12.90).

  1. I love these Malay kuihs but I would want them to be extra lemak, lots of santan. Not cheap, the things here, would have to be extra nice so one can get value for money.

    1. Suituapui: yup, the rich textures and flavours add that extra dimension to the kuih, and that brings back memories of the way the kuih tasted in the good ol' days ;)
